Simultaneous Engagement of Networks for Alleviating Pain
(SENAP)

The brain is made up of networks that connect different areas for specific functions. Two important networks for chronic pain are the somatocognitive action network (SCAN) and the cingulo-opercular network (CON). By electrically stimulating these networks at the same time, we may be able to help reduce chronic pain.

SENAP study uses two small electrodes placed on the surface of the brain to stimulate these two networks that are linked to your pain. A special MRI will help doctors find the best spot for these electrodes. If you choose to participate, it will involve a surgical procedure and about 12 months of follow-up care.

What's involved:

  1. A 3-hour MRI to map your personal brain networks and plan electrode placement

  2. Two surgeries: the electrodes first, then the stimulator a few days later

  3. About 5 days in the hospital research unit between the two surgeries

  4. About 10 visits at the U of M in Minneapolis over roughly 12 months

  5. Questionnaires, thinking tests, and daily check-ins on your phone

  6. A Garmin watch worn to track your sleep and activity

You may be eligible to participate if:

  • You are 22 years of age or older

  • You have had nerve pain for more than 6 months that has not responded to medications or other treatments

  • You have an average pain score of 6 or higher on a 0-10 scale

  • You have a chronic pain diagnosis that may include

    • Post-stroke

    • Multiple Sclerosis

    • Phantom limb pain

    • Anesthesia Dolorosa

    • Postherpetic neuralgia

    • Radiation injury

    • Nerve injury

SENAP covers the costs of the device, surgeries, and your hospital stay, so you won't receive any bills for these—although we may bill Medicare. We also reimburse travel and parking expenses, and if you live too far to drive to Minneapolis, we’ll also take care of your flights and lodging. Please note that reimbursement for travel costs incurred by travel companions is not included as part of the study.

Participation if voluntary and you may withdraw at any time. All information is kept confidential.
